Rain Helps Orioles Beat the Yankees
Date of Event: August 13, 1978
On August 13, 1978, a game between the Orioles and the Yankees was called in the middle of the 7th inning after just 36 minutes of rain. According to rules at the time, the game would be decided by reverting to the last full inning at play; so, the Orioles won 3-0, as was the score at the end of the 6th inning and Yankees’ 5-run lead at the top of the 7th didn’t count. Yankees’ manager, Bob Lemon, of course protested, which eventually lead to a rule change in 1980, stating the game must be resumed to conclusion on a later date.
