Date of Event: April 24, 1901

 During the 1890s, a strong-willed baseball executive by the name of Byron Bancroft Johnson set out to form a new major league. On April 24, 1901, he accomplished his goal, and the first American League game was played. The American League opened with a win for Charles Comiskey and his White Stockings, but the real winner on that day was the game of professional baseball. Two years later, the National and American Leagues played the first world series, and the two leagues have been going at it in the fall classic ever since.
