Podcast Highlights

Date of Event: July 31, 1935

On July 31, 1935, Cincinnati Reds’ owner, Larry MacPhail, sought to bring a large crowd to Crosley Field, and that he did. Reaching well over capacity seating, more 10,000 fans herded onto to the field to watch from a roped off area. One of those fans, a lady named Kitty Burke, took a bat from Babe Herman and strove to the batter’s box. She hit a ball thrown by Paul Dean, and became the only woman ever to bat in a major league game.
