Black Mike Beaned
Date of Event: May 25, 1937
On May 25, 1937, Bump Haldey of the Yankees worked the full count to Mickey Cochrane. Cochrane had homered off of him in the third inning. In the fifth inning, the score was tied 1-1, and Hadley didn’t want to give Black Mike a pitch he could hit. What Hadley did give him stunned the baseball world—a fastball that fractured his skull in three places, ending his career and very nearly his life.
